The Scar We’re All Born With

Learn about tummy tuck proceudres at Boston's Coastal Plastic Surgery

….it’s the belly button.  As our only natural scar, it’s absence or distortion can be conspicuous.  Furthermore, we’re often fascinated with our belly buttons- giving them characteristics like “innies” or “outies”, and even personalities like “happy” and “sad”.  My infant son loves sticking things in his.

As a plastic surgeon that performs tummy tuck procedures at my Boston practice, paying particular attention to the belly button is important.  Rebuilding the belly button is often the last part of the procedure and shouldn’t be denied it’s due full attention.  With a properly located tummy tuck scar hidden well below clothing/bikini bottoms, the only potentially visible sign that a surgery has been performed is going to be the scar associated with the belly button repair.

Multiple articles have been written with techniques for addressing the belly button during a tummy tuck, and whenever there are multiple techniques described for one problem that typically means none of them are perfect.  I use a unique approach, individually tailored to each patient, and patients have been very pleased with the results.  Scars are hidden and the belly buttons are back to being “happy”.  Additionally, my dual certification in General and Plastic Surgery gives me the tools to simultaneously perform umbilical hernia repair and a tummy tuck in the same operation – an advanced technique which patients are often told by others can’t be done.

If you’re thinking about having a tummy tuck this spring in order to get ready for the summer, I encourage you to schedule a consultation to discuss your options.  Great outcomes depend upon attention to details, and that’s something we take a lot of pride in here at Coastal Plastic Surgery.
