1. Don’t Skip Help at Home

The first two weeks after surgery are the most demanding, especially with young children in the house. Line up help before your surgery date, not after, to avoid lifting, bending, or chasing after kids when your body needs rest most.

2. Don’t Lift Heavy Objects or Kids Too Soon

Lifting puts strain on your healing abdominal muscles and incisions. Even picking up a toddler can set back your progress! I’ll let you know when it’s safe to carry anything heavier than 10 to 15 pounds, based on your specific procedure combination and healing progress.

3. Don’t Skip Your Compression Garment

Your compression garment supports the healing tissue, reduces swelling, and helps your new contours settle properly. Skipping it, even for a day, can affect how your results look once you’ve fully recovered.

4. Don’t Smoke, Vape, or Drink Alcohol

Nicotine restricts blood flow to healing tissue, while alcohol can interfere with medications and slow your recovery. Both raise your risk of complications at exactly the time your body needs to heal efficiently.

5. Don’t Neglect Your Incision Care

Skipping your wound care instructions, exposing your incisions to the sun, or picking at healing skin can all worsen scarring. While scars are a natural part of any surgical procedure, how you care for them early on affects how they look in the long run.

6. Don’t Rush Back to Your Workouts

Returning to the gym before your tissue and muscles have properly healed can compromise your diastasis recti repair or increase swelling. Ease back into activity in stages, typically starting with light exercise around 4 to 6 weeks and building up gradually over the following couple of months. Let your body, not your calendar, set the pace.
